Share More than the Road in Florida

Florida strives to provide fast, reliable public transportation for commuters. In addition, creating alternatives to driving is a key goal of the Florida Department of Transportation to minimize congestion and support eco-friendly transport. Florida is actively building new bridges and creating safer infrastructure for Florida public transit. Fixed-route buses in Florida travel along roads that are attended to and trolleys loop around cities to get people where they need to be. Cycle share systems like Coast Bike Share bring the possibility of cycling through Florida’s cities with ease – and without having to worry about pumping your tires! 

In Jacksonville, the JTA (Jacksonville Transportation Authority) offers the first fully autonomous public transportation system network in the country with the NAVI shuttle service. In Central Florida, LYNX and SunRail support commuters across the Greater Orlando area, while PSTA (Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority) gets riders in Pinellas County to their destinations.  

In Southern Florida, Palm Tran serves Palm Beach County while Tri-Rail links Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. For transport across the state, Amtrak and Brightline offer rail service, with Brightline boasting the fastest American trains outside the Northeast. Each region’s transit authority offers system maps and trip planners, making getting around Florida seamless for residents and visitors alike. 

Personal Transportation

With a wide network of roads, you’ll never have a problem getting around Florida. I-95, Florida’s Turnpike and other highways make transportation in Florida simple with the help of your own vehicle, whether it’s gas-powered or electric. 

Florida takes initiative when it comes to maintaining good road conditions. According to Reason Foundation’s 29th Annual Highway Report, the state’s highway system ranks 14th in the nation overall, with especially strong marks in pavement and bridge quality: 2nd for rural interstate pavement condition, 6th for urban interstate pavement condition, and 9th for structurally deficient bridges. 

Greener transportation alternatives are on the rise across Florida, so don’t feel like biking or driving are your only options. Orlando’s Downtown Loop makes it easy to get around without a car, and it’s far from the only option. Brightline offers high-speed, car-free rail between Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Orlando, while Miami’s free Metromover and Tampa’s free TECO Line Streetcar make getting around those downtowns effortless, no car required.
